Music Business Tip: How To Get A Music Manager & Do You Need One?

Music Business Tip: Producers, do you really need a manager? Things every artist, band and producer should know and consider before hiring one The most common misconception is that if you have a music manager life will be easier and you'll make more money. Sometimes it works out that way and other times it doesn't. One thing you have to remember is that a manager has to make money as well.  Some of you are thinking, "that's fine, make it happen", but understand that in order for a manager to be paid, they must take a percentage of what you're making per project. This means the manager is going to have one of two things 1. Take a % from what you're charging your current clients. This could be bad because if you don't make a lot, then the manager isn't making enough and what was good pay for you is now reduced Thing about it like this. If you charge $200 per track (or whatever) and the manager steps in and handles the communications,...

A modest proposal for fixing the music industry | Brian McTear |

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Brian McTear grew up wanting to be a rock star, but he had one problem: In the late ‘90s, we all just stopped paying for music. How can a hard-working musician or producer make a living now? McTear, with his project Weathervane Music , has stumbled on a way — and it’s both practical and deeply focused on our shared love of music. And yes, his model can work for all kinds of content creators. Brian McTear is a nationally respected record producer , musician, and owner of one of Philadelphia’s most revered independent recording studios, Miner Street Recordings in Fishtown. He is also the founder of Weathervane Music, a nonprofit arts and culture organization whose mission is to advance independent music and the community that surrounds it. Weathervane is working to develop a program to provide teaching materials for college and university recording programs to change the way future enginee...

Digital Collaboration: Virtual Music Auditions in Music Xray

Image via CrunchBase The Digital Age has literally exploded the amount of talent that is available to the emerging artist. With a little bit of electronic savvy, you can collaborate with musicians, filmmakers, composers, actors, and visual artists from all over the globe. But screening talent virtually can get complicated. For Libertaria: The Virtual Opera , an animated opera produced entirely online, I used Music Xray to find talented opera and pop singers.  What is Music Xray? Music Xray i s an online platform that is meant to connect artists to music companies and producers. Typically artists pay a small fee to get their work heard by a professional, although the music pro can waive the fee which leaves the artist only paying the Music Xray handling fee (about $4). The site itself has had some controversy for not properly vetting music producers and for taking advantage of musicians through music pros that aren't properly vetted. On the other hand many musicians ha...

Making Music in a New Musical Style or Music Genre

When producing music, whether for a band, a film, an album, or an instrumental ensemble, musicians have a tendency to stick with what they know. And while sticking to a particular genre will help you develop your distinct musical style, branching out to styles you are unfamiliar with will not only expand your horizons, but also will make you more marketable.  When working on a new project, I always ask myself what kind of style would work best? In 2002 I wrote some music for up and coming director Kalup Linzy 's film series  "All My Churen ". He wanted a dance music score. I didn't have much experience in dance music, besides some fiddling with a synth in class. Fortunately, there was a local dance music radio station which I tuned into for three months straight. Not only did I get the beats, I also learned how to change my vocal pitch to match the thin tones of many of the artists. The title track, World Order #1 , is still one of my more successful "pop"...

10 Tips on Creating a Quiet Acoustic Recording Environment in Your Home Music Studio

10 Tips on Creating a Quiet Acoustic Recording Environment in Your Home Music Studio Chances are, you don't have a ton of money to make your home studio into top of the line, soundproof, professional-level, recording studio. Doing so would most likely involve tearing down your whole house and beginning from the ground up with top architects specializing in acoustics.  Yet, home studios are giving professional studios a run for their money, as professional level consumer software makes the PC (or Mac), one's own audio/video editing workstations. So, how can you better soundproof your studio affordably? Here are some tips: FIND THE QUIETEST ROOM IN YOUR HOME/APARTMENT . Look out for things like air conditioners, being too close to the street, a noisy neighbor, an uninsulated window that lets in outside noise. And, while the garage is great for band practice, for recording, you want to be somewhere that you can control both the temperature (for the equipment) a...
