READ THE FULL ARTICLE:  Open Your Ears to Electronic Dance Music (EDM) The EDM Family Tree It is not surprising that we find the beginnings of dance music in the tripping 1970s  disco  halls. The genre, long associated with drug culture, provided the soundtrack to a generation that was fresh out of the political turmoil of the sixties and was now deeply embedded in drinking, recreational drug use, and all-night dancing. Although disco’s popularity died by the 1980s, some of its musical innovations – like the use of synthesizers –  formed the pulse of later genres like  house ,  electro , and  techno . Donna Summer’s “I Feel Love” was heavy on the synthesizers and strong beat:

I plucked out he main theme on the keys and added in some dissonance and bent pitches to fit the bizarre spacyness of the track playing in my head. I added in the requisite synthesizers, a slight beat, and droid-esque sound effects . To wrap it in a bow, I took the original theme, reverse it, added effects and ended the entire track with the first few notes of the theme, as if it was some sort of sonic portal to present emitting from the trapped Morning Edition Martian Staff. SCI Region II Student Mix Tape - Call for Recordings Deadline:  Dec. 12, 2014 Fee: None Open to: All student composers in New York, New Jersey , and Puerto Rico The Society of Composers, Inc.
